The former Germany striker Gerd Mueller has said that the best player in the world has broken his all-time goalscoring record, which has stood for more than 40 years. The German striker managed to score 85 goals in just 60 matches for Bayern Munich and West Germany more than 40 years ago. It seemed like no other player will be able to replicate that feat again, but the Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has recently overtaken the German striker. He even has three more games to add to his tally before the end of the calendar year. Lionel Messi has now scored 86 goals for Argentina and Barcelona in 2012.
Mueller has said that his extremely happy for Lionel Messi because he is an extremely modest professional, who is the best player in the world according to him. He has said that he hopes Messi will be able to add even more goals to his tally and have the record for the next 40 years. Lionel Messi is widely regarded to be the best player in the world, but the 2012 year has been outstanding for him. Even though he does not been able to add many team accolades, he has almost single-handedly helped Barcelona come close to winning numerous titles last season.
“My record stood for 40 years – 85 goals in 60 games. Now the best player in the world has broken it. I’m delighted for him. He is an incredible player, gigantic. He’s such a nice and modest professional and I hope he gets one or two more goals in 2012 and that he can then hold on to the record for the next 40 years. He’s fantastic. He only has one defect and that is that he doesn’t play for Bayern Munich!” said Gerd Mueller after his record was broken.
