Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has accepted that the club witnessed a bust up between manager Luis Enrique and superstar Lionel Messi in the training ground. There have been rumours about this bust up over the last few weeks, but this is the first time a player from Barcelona has confirmed the incident.Mathieu tried to downplay the significance of the event were saying that such incidents of common at big clubs. It is understood that the bust up happened just days after the club returned from their winter break. Messi responded angrily to some comments from Enrique and the situation escalated from there.
Mathieu says that Enrique had a word with Messi while the team had returned from training and into the dressing room. It is learnt that the bust up happened just two days before the season resumed with a league match against Real Sociedad. Shockingly, this match ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Catalan club and they missed a great opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table given that Madrid also lost that weekend. The failure to take advantage of Real Madrid’s slip sees Barcelona one point behind the table leaders albeit having played a game more.
“It was when we got back from holiday. Suddenly, for a foul that wasn’t given, ‘Leo’ blew his top. Things got tense, they said a few things to each other. The coach came to speak to him in the dressing room afterwards and that’s that. It happens at every club, but because it’s Barcelona, it’s made out to be a huge thing. That’s the problem,” saidMathieu. Messi’s performances have escalated since then with the superstar scoring goals in just six matches while also contributing through three assists. This has helped Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.
